The Google Map Pack: Where 'Near Me' Customers Actually Go
What the Google local map pack is, why it sits above the regular results, and how a complete, verified Business Profile decides who gets the "roofer near me" phone calls.
Search "roofer near me" and look at what Google actually shows you. Ads first, sometimes. Then — before any normal website result — a map with three local businesses: names, star ratings, phone numbers, a Call button. That box is the local map pack, and for a trade business it is the single most valuable piece of real estate on the internet.
Why those three spots matter so much
The map pack sits above the traditional results, it looks like a recommendation rather than an ad, and it answers the searcher's whole question in one glance: who's nearby, are they any good, how do I call them. A huge share of "near me" searches end right there — the searcher never scrolls past the map. If your business isn't in that box, to those customers you effectively don't exist, no matter how good your website is.
What decides who's in the box
Google fills the pack from Google Business Profiles — the free listing every business can claim. Three things drive who shows: proximity to the searcher, relevance to what they typed, and prominence — which is where profile quality comes in. A complete profile (services listed, real photos, accurate hours, service area, reviews arriving steadily) consistently beats a bare name-and-pin, because Google promotes listings that look alive and answer searchers' questions.
The verification hurdle
Claiming the profile is easy. Verifying it — proving to Google you're a real business at a real location — is where trades get stuck: video verification of your premises and equipment, rejected attempts, support loops. It's a one-time pain, but it's the gate everything else sits behind, and half-finished verifications are why so many legitimate businesses are invisible on the map.
Done for you
Our Google Business Profile Setup ($300, one-time) takes the whole thing off your plate: we create the profile, get it through verification, load your services, photos, hours and service area, and connect it to your website so the profile and the site reinforce each other — which is exactly the combination Google rewards.
Your competitors on that map aren't better roofers. They just showed up where the customers are looking.
