What a $2,000 Ad Budget Actually Buys a Contractor
The worked math on Local Services Ads for trades — cost per lead, close rates on exclusive leads, and why a managed account out-earns a set-and-forget one.
Let's do the math nobody shows you before asking for your ad budget. Real numbers, sourced from what local-services advertising actually costs trades in 2026 — and the honest version of what management adds.
The worked example
Local Services Ads charge per lead — an actual customer calling you — not per click. For roofing, cost-per-lead typically lands around $45–120; call it ~$65 for round numbers.
- $2,000/month ÷ ~$65 per lead ≈ 30 leads.
- LSA leads are exclusive and high-intent — the customer picked you off the top of the page. Trades close these at roughly 25–40%, versus the 5–15% typical of the shared-lead platforms that sell the same homeowner to four contractors. Call it 30%: ~9 booked jobs.
- Residential roofing jobs run roughly $9,000–15,000. Nine jobs ≈ low six figures of booked work, from $2,000 of ads.
Even if your niche's numbers land at half that, the asymmetry is the point: the ad spend is a rounding error against the work it books. This is why the top three LSA spots in your town are permanently occupied — the businesses holding them are printing money and have no reason to leave.
Why "managed" beats set-and-forget
If the math is that good, why does anyone need management? Because an unmanaged LSA account leaks:
- Lead quality needs a reviewer. Google retired manual lead disputes in 2024 — credits now flow only through its automated lead-rating system, and only a fraction of poorly-rated leads come back as credits. Rating every lead promptly and steering targeting away from the sources producing junk is how a managed account keeps the effective cost-per-lead honest; unmanaged accounts never rate anything and just absorb it.
- Budgets need steering. Storm week and mid-January are different markets. Bids, budget caps and targeting need a hand on them, seasonally and weekly.
- Ranking within LSA is earned. Google ranks Guaranteed businesses partly on responsiveness and review velocity — things that need tending, not hoping.
Our Local Ads Management ($1,000/month, flat) is that hand: we run the account end to end — bids, budget steering, lead review and disputes, tuning — while the calls route to you. Your ad budget stays yours, at a cap you set; our fee never touches it or scales against it. One decent job a month covers the fee several times over; the other eight are the point.
